Perfect Songs - Moondance (Take 22)

moondance

There are several songs I could pick off of Van Morrison's 1970 album, Moondance and label them perfect. "And It Stoned Me" or "Into the Mystic" immediately come to mind. It's a great album, period. And it would certainly be simple enough to stick to the well known title track. I've always loved that song, no matter how overplayed it might be (at least it's not "Brown Eyed Girl," though). But recently, I was completely blown away by an outtake from this album. I don't have much to say about "Moondance (Take 22)," found on the deluxe version of the album, except maybe wow. It's slower, slinkier and mostly instrumental. The band just smokes through this thing. "Moondance" is jazzy, but this is pure jazz and something else. This is perfect in a way I wasn't sure I would have ever expected. Just listen for yourself and try not to get lost in it. Perfect.
